They set out from base camp early the next day toward their final destination—the cliff ledge where the priceless orchid grew and were now about halfway through their eight hour journey. Adam hoisted his heavy backpack higher on his shoulder and fell in line behind Jillian as they followed the narrow path through the forest. Staff would have returned by now to tear down their previous base camp and move it to the next location in time for dinner. Adam made sure the bots under his supervision worked within strict guidelines and instructions, especially this weekend when the unusually strong solar flare seemed to be messing with everyone’s processors.

Sleep wasn’t something he usually required, nor was food, but last night he’d been so preoccupied by what had happened he’d closed his eyes and had immediately been transported back to that campfire—remembering the feel of Jillian’s soft, luscious curves pressed tight against him, the sweet taste of her honey kisses on his lips, the smell of her rose perfume mixed with the heady fragrance of her arousal, the bewitching sounds of her tiny, wanton mewls as he’d ground himself against her…

In truth, it had all been enough to cause an emission of his nanocyte sperm. Still, given the nature—and subject—of the graphic fantasy, it had been worth it.

Distracted, he tripped on a root and caught himself on the trunk of a nearby tree.

“Okay back there?” Jillian glanced at him over her shoulder.

“Fine,” Adam said, forcing the word past his constricted vocal cords. He coughed to clear his throat then continued down the path, beside her this time to avoid watching at the gentle sway of her hips. “Did you sleep well?”

“I did.” She stared straight ahead, though a telltale hint of pink stained her high cheekbones, indicating he hadn’t been the only one remembering their steamy kiss last night.

They stopped near a small group of boulders to rest. The mid-day sun was blazing, yet the heat and humidity were offset by the cooling ocean breezes drifting in from the Atlantic. Seagulls squawked overhead and the smells of earth and sea filled the air. The island really was a mystical paradise brought to magnificent life through Rez’s presence. “You mentioned visualizing auras yesterday. Do you see these energy fields all the time?”

She nodded, opening a bottle of water and taking a long gulp before answering. “It’s normally the first thing I notice about a person. Take your boss, for example. His energy is very interesting. There’s a lot of violet, indicating enlightenment and divine wisdom, which is good. But there are also flickers of dark red suggesting anger and frustration, and black, meaning deep fear. It’s quite unsettling and tends to keep people at a distance.”

“And what do you see when you read me?” Adam asked.

Her smile nearly staggered him. “When I read you, everything is quiet and peaceful. A nice soothing white.”

“That’s good.”

“Yes, it’s not often I find that kind of respite in the chaos.”

They sat for a moment, each in their own thoughts while she devoured an energy bar.
